Reclamation Day

  • Location: Vault 76
  • Given By: Overseer
  • XP: 200

Walkthrough:

The quest begins after character creation and after the player character has picked up the Pip-Boy next to the door of their room. Waypoints and cardboard cutouts of a Vault Boy will lead the player character through the vault, as the voice of the Overseer plays. Items such as food, clothing, and medical items can be collected from various stands lining the path to the exit, supervised by the Mister Handy bots assigned to the Vault to watch over it after everyone has left. Basic gameplay mechanics, including the C.A.M.P., hunger, and dehydration are explained along the way, including via interaction with the various Mr. Handy robots located at the stations along the way. Exiting the vault will complete the quest.

First Contact

  • Location: Overseer's Camp Flatwoods
  • Given By: N/A
  • XP: 150

Walkthrough:

During Wayward Souls, accept the job from Duchess to receive the overseer's holotape. Listen to the holotape and follow the road southwest to Flatwoods. Expect to find a few mongrels and mole rats along the way, maybe a hostile Mr. Farmhand. Once there, head into the church that served as the headquarters for the Responders to find another holotape to listen to in the Overseer's cache there. To conclude the quest, head over to the tavern opposite the church and register as a volunteer with the Responders at one of the registration terminals there.

Thirst Things First

  • Location: Flatwoods
  • Given By: Flatwoods Responders Terminal
  • XP: 400

Walkthrough:

This is a tutorial quest introducing the basics of survival. One has to first find Kesha's body over by the river, curled up on the bank. Her location can also be obtained from the self-serve kiosk, after accessing the people's directory.

There will be a water test kit on her body. After procuring it, one must sample two locations, one at the river nearby, the other at the water pumps located at the edge of town near the farms. Activating the water source by collecting or drinking will collect a sample.

Following this, one must return to the church and upload the sample to Kesha's terminal behind the automated vendor. This will lead to the conclusion that water must first be boiled to be made potable. Then one will gather wood and two units of dirty water, subsequently using any cooking station to make Boiled Water.
Revisiting the kiosk will end the quest. Halfway through to volunteer status!

Second Helpings

  • Location: Flatwoods
  • Given By: Flatwoods Responders Terminal
  • XP: 432

Walkthrough:

Reverend Delbert's home is one of the long trailer homes near the church, but closer to the edge of town near the Red Rocket fueling station. The reverend is dead, but his body carries a survivor story and his terminal contains the instructions for the training. The dweller has to access them and learn how to make a ribeye steak.

To do so, they need a piece of brahmin meat and some wood. The first can be gathered from any brahmin corpse in Flatwoods, while the latter is obtained from logs or by deconstructing melee weapons.

Then the dweller simply has to craft one at a cooking station, in which there are two outside the diner in the parking lot, check in with the kiosk to be officially certified as a Volunteer, then contact the Responders using the main terminal just inside the Flatwoods church. This will complete the quest and lead to Final Departure at the Morgantown Airport.

Final Departure

  • Location: Morgantown Airport
  • Given By: Responders Terminal
  • XP: 400

Walkthrough:

Head into the Morgantown Airport Terminal.

Clear out the Scorched and get to the second floor (keycard required).

Learn the fate of the Responders by listening to Maria's last words.

Listen to Overseer's log - Morgantown.

Learn about the Inoculation Project by accessing the Responders Laboratory Terminal, located on the second floor of the third airport hangar, near the area where Collision Course takes place.

An Ounce of Prevention

  • Location: AVR Medical Center
  • Given By: Responders Terminal
  • XP: 150

Walkthrough:

After completing Final Departure, the next stop is Charleston and the AVR Medical Center. Hudson's lab is located in the southwestern corner of the facility, in the basement (either drop down through the cafeteria floor or use the staircase by the street exit). Use the terminal to learn the story and that she almost completed her research. The automatic software set up by the doctor is set up to auto-create a vaccine from the DNA of feral ghouls.

The player characters need to collect that and a type-T fuse. The fuse can be found in the Charleston Trainyard.
Feral ghouls can be found all over Charleston, mostly in the eastern parts and around the Capitol Building.

Once the player character has both ingredients, they just need to get back to the AVR Medical Center and Hudson's lab, place the replacement fuse in the fuse box under the stairs, put the blood sample in the centrifuge by the AVR medical terminal, analyze it, then use the Sympto-Matic to inoculate themselves. Claire Hudson's recording will play, directing them to the Fire Breathers of the Charleston Fire Department, leading to Into the Fire.

Into the Fire

  • Location: Charleston Fire Department
  • Given By: Fire Breathers Terminal
  • XP: 800

Walkthrough:

This quest can be started by approaching the Charleston Fire Department and listening to the Protectron's advertisements about joining the Fire Breathers division of the Responders. The player character is prompted to utilize one of the terminals and take a Knowledge Exam on fire safety, the answers to which can be found on information pamphlets scattered around the Charleston Fire Department. Alternatively, the process can be expedited by acquiring the knowledge exam cheat sheet, found next to the master terminal on the second floor. The answers to all 7 of the questions are as follows:

Evacuate as quickly as possible.

A water-soaked rag.

Gently bind the burn with clean bandages.

Retreat immediately.

1 pt. Purified Water, 2 Ash Roses, 2 blight, 2 Soot Flowers.

Fall back and engage from a distance with firearms.

End his life as mercifully as possible.

The next step is to take a Physical Exam at a testing site at the Charleston Herald Building. This starts the quest Runner's High, in which the player character must complete an obstacle course and clear two checkpoints within three minutes. Once this is passed, the final exam is held at the Belching Betty mineshaft in the Ash Heap.

There, a Protectron named Bernie hands out the Fire Breather uniform and Fire Breather helmet and an anti-Scorched training pistol, as well as the Fire Breathers final exam briefing holotape.

Exploring Belching Betty reveals the story of the Scorchslayers, a squad of Fire Breathers initiates, who died fighting the Scorched at the location. The primary objective of the final exam is to activate an emergency beacon in the northeastern end of the mineshaft. Upon the beacon's activation, a new wave of Scorched does attack, while Bernie asks the Vault Dweller via radio to return to him for a final debrief. He then gives the Welcome to the Fire Breathers holotape and asks for the player to return to the Charleston Fire Department for company registration.

Registration can be completed on the Fire Breathers' master terminal on the second floor of the Charleston Fire Department. While putting their name into the system, the player character is alerted of an incoming priority call. Listening to it concludes this quest and starts The Missing Link.

Runner's High

  • Location: Charleston Herald Building
  • Given By: Physical Exam Terminal
  • XP: 300

Walkthrough:

In order to join the Fire Breathers each volunteer must complete a parkour and agility run across Charleston. The starting point is on the second floor of the Charleston Herald Building, the goal is to run to the Capitol Building and back to the start within three minutes or less.

The trial itself is started via the "Fire Breathers Physical Exam Terminal", and after brief preparation period of 15 seconds, the three minute timer starts and the player is tasked via audio clue to press the initial "Checkpoint Button A" next to the terminal. The suggested path towards the capitol is more or less linear, with red arrows and Responders decals painted on floors and walls, as well as black arrow signs in the streets, indicating where to go.

The path leads east into a ruined building and up a fire ladder onto a small roof. The roof leads into a second building, at the end of the hallway are two broken up walls on the southern side, leading outside. From here, jump down and follow the black arrow signs south, past the collapsed metal bridge and up the wooden stairs seen in the distance, which lead to the "Checkpoint Button B", which needs to be pressed. The button is located next to the entrance to the Capitol Courthouse.

The suggested return path leads east, then north past the Liberty Bell and back onto the remains of Interstate 59, then west back to the ground level entrance to the Charleston Herald Building. All that is left to do here is to head back to the second floor and press the initial button for a second time to stop the clock. Finishing in under three minutes successfully completes the quest, failing to race the clock does not have any consequences, as the quest can be started again unlimited times via the terminal.

The Missing Link

  • Location: Top of the World
  • Given By: Hank Madigan OR Abigayle Singh
  • XP: 600

Walkthrough:

Reach the Top of the World located in the center of the map, and speak to Rose.

Complete the quests Signal Strength, Flavors of Mayhem, and Key to the Past as part of the Raider section of the main quest line.

Grab the broken uplink in the raider's cache in the basement of Pleasant Valley Ski Resort.

Hack the terminal at Abbie's Bunker and head in, completing the quest and starting the Free States portion of the main quest line with their first quest, Early Warnings.

Signal Strength

  • Location: Top of the World
  • Given By: Rose
  • XP: N/A

Walkthrough:

The player character cannot access the top level of the Top of the World unless they repair the signal. One must first travel to the Seneca Rocks Visitor Center and search the bodies there for signal repeater notes and a signal repeater schematic. Look for Darion Jones, in military fatigues.

The materials need to be collected next, including an RCX01-A39 duplexer at the 98 NAR Regional wreckage near the New Appalachian central trainyard and an SMU-97 transponder at the Horizon's Rest plane crash site. The transponder is located on the cliffs, inside the derelict airliner's pilot's cabin, on the wall. The duplexer is in the overturned red NAR wagon just next to the state route at the crash. Watch out for super mutants at Horizon's Rest and robots at the 98 NAR Regional wreckage, including a Sentry Bot.

Once collected, one must combine the two at any Tinker's Workbench to create a signal booster. With it in hand, head to the National Isolated Radio Array and mount it in the auxiliary dish to the northeast. A group of robots will spawn. These robots are often a group of Mister Gutsies, usually either lieutenants, majors, or colonels. Several of the Gutsies may be legendary enemies as well, meaning that they will explode a few seconds after death. They also have ballistic weaponry that can down a player character in a few hits due to their high firing rate, usually using .44 or .45 rounds. Super mutants will normally be found at the location as well, including one in the structure where the terminal for rerouting the power is located.

After dealing with the robots, reroute the power, listen to Rose's broadcast now that she's able to send it all over Appalachia, and return to Rose at the Top of the World. She will let them up and allow them to "meet" Hank Madigan. This quest is also mandatory to be able to complete Strange Bedfellows as player characters need to be in Rose's good favor before she'll help them meet with Meg and befriend the Raiders.

Flavors of Mayhem

  • Location: Top of the World
  • Given By: Rose
  • XP: N/A

Walkthrough:

Rose tasks the player character with locating five holotape key fragments dispersed among the five raider gangs. To find out where to locate the keys, the player will have to first travel to Blackwater Mine and access the terminal in the foyer. This will provide a series of clues on where to find the keys.

  • The first belongs to the Blackwater Bandits. The key is found on Freddie Lang, a glowing feral ghoul found deeper in the mine, in the bandits' encampment (the northern branch from the main tunnel).
  • The second belongs to the Trappers. The Trappers note will point to Walter Griswold's corpse. He is rigged to explode 30 seconds after being looted, but a Perception +2 check when near the body allows the trap to be discovered beforehand and possibly disarmed before grabbing the key fragment.
  • The third belongs to the Diehards. The player character has to travel to the Sunnytop Ski Lanes and find Margie McClintock's Holotape in the suite on the northern end of the building, by the terminal. Margie destroyed her holotape, but her lieutenant maintained a copy of the key fragment. His terminal in the basement by the rental counter points to the Palace of the Winding Path. A copy of the tape can be gathered from the duplication terminal on the ground floor. To access the duplication terminal, find the admin password, which is located in the cultists' quarters in the eastern wing.
  • The fourth belongs to the Gourmands. Their encampment is found at Bolton Greens. The Gourmands note on top of the main building leads to the wendigo cave in the Savage Divide. The key is found on Morris Stevens, a wendigo located at the end of the cave.
  • The fifth belongs to David Thorpe. David, now turned by the Scorched Plague, can be found at Big Fred's BBQ Shack.
Once all key fragments have been collected, return to Rose at the Top of the World and hand them to her.

Rose has one final request: find Rosalynn Jeffries at the Charleston Capitol Building. Rosalynn's body is in the courthouse jail and can be located using the jail terminal to find a Doe, J.

Once all other tasks have been completed, the player is then directed to the cache beneath the Pleasant Valley Ski Resort. It is located past the offices and the souvenir shop, down a staircase that leads to the luggage sorting room. The keycard lies under the door mat before the entrance.

Inside the cache is a plethora of items and the broken uplink necessary to advance The Missing Link and Early Warnings.

  • Gourmands' key fragment - On Morris Stevens (progenitor wendigo) in the wendigo cave.
  • Cutthroats key fragment - Big Fred's BBQ Shack on the now Scorched David Thorpe.
